The direction of “Stranger Than Fiction” is probably what makes it so good. All the actors give great performances, yes, and the writing is great, but what is striking are the camera angles and the physical depth within the pictures. The director takes such simplistic spaces and makes them very interesting. But then I come back to the writing and I really lvoe that. this movie is like a more dramatic Douglas Adams book. Emma Thompson’s character has similar writing styles and humor of Adams. Using inanimate objects like the wristwatch as active plot devices are absolutely in the same vein as Douglas Adams. Also, the wrecking ball slamming into Harold’s house felt like a direct reference to Arthur Dent’s house being demolished by a bulldozer in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams’ most famous and probably best book). It’s just an all around great film.
